An Army sergeant who was wounded in Afghanistan received a Purple Heart by President Trump.
While many expected the President to play golf that day, he decided to go to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center with First Lady Melania Trump where he gave Sgt. First Class Alvaro Barrientos the award.
Barrientos got his right leg amputated below the knee after he suffered an injury in March.
“When I heard about this, I wanted to do it myself,” Trump said. “Congratulations on behalf of Melania and myself and the entire nation. Tremendous, tremendous job, congratulations.”
President Trump stayed after the ceremony and toured the facility while meeting with other service members for about 90 minutes.
