President Donald Trump plans to interrupt his stay next week at Trump Tower
with a quick out-and-back trip to Washington on Monday,
according to an updated presidential schedule presented to local New York City law enforcement and reviewed by POLITICO.
The president had been scheduled to arrive in New York City Sunday evening and hold two days of “internal meetings” at
his old home and office building on Fifth Avenue. He is now scheduled to fly
back to Washington on Monday morning and return to Manhattan on Monday evening.
It was not immediately clear why the president was returning to the nation’s
capital in the middle of his planned 17-day summer break.
The White House has been undergoing major renovations in the president’s absence,
and the Oval Office has been cleared out for a refurbishment.
West Wing staffers who stayed behind have been working out of the Old Executive Office Building across the street.
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders did not immediately return calls or emails.
The schedule – updated Friday but still subject to change – shows Trump
returning to JFK Airport late Monday afternoon and remaining at
Trump Tower for two nights before heading to Bedminster, New Jersey,
on Wednesday to finish out the final days of his summer break.
Trump had previously been scheduled to spend Sunday through Wednesday holed up in Trump Tower, his first return home since his inauguration.
Trump has been resistant to the notion that he might be taking some time off – insisting on Twitter that “This is not a vacation!”
even while pictures have emerged on Instagram of the president posing with fans in golf garb on the green.
On Thursday he held court with the press in his most extensive public unburdening since his last full press conference in February.
